Located a mere twenty-minutes’ drive north of the Kona airport, the Kohala coast has earned its reputation for both world-class accommodations and unrivaled natural beauty. Home to some of the island’s best hotels and golf courses—not to mention some of our best beaches and natural scenery—the Kohala coast is also where you’ll find some of the most-desirable options for food and shopping in all of Hawai’i.
Today, we’d like to share a bit more about three of the most outstanding shopping and dining experiences to be had—and all centrally located amidst some of the most-desirable land in all the world.
Let’s get started!
The Shops at Mauna Lani
This upscale, open-air shopping center features several excellent dining and unique shopping options for you and your ‘ohana’s enjoyment.
Make a day out of perusing all the wonderful shops on display, and if you’re looking for some excellent places to dig up some ono grindz, you’re in luck: The Shops at Mauna Lani has something for everyone! From the upscale fare of Ruth’s Chris Steak House to a laid-back snack at Tommy Bahama Restaurant and Bar, these unique eateries are serving up some truly outstanding cuisine to suit every palate and desire.
Currently, the live weekly music and hula shows have been on pause due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, but with the numbers trending downward and the statewide mask mandate lifting on March 26th it’s only a matter of time until this Kohala tradition is back up and running to delight visitors and kama’aina alike.
Located within the world-famous Mauna Lani Resort, the Shops should absolutely be on the itinerary for your next pass through the Kohala coast.
Meanwhile, King’s Shops has long been considered one of the Big Island’s must-see destinations, offering visitors a blend of exquisite dining, shopping, and entertainment—and you can’t miss this 71,000 square-foot lakeside shopping center in the heart of the Kohala Coast!
Open daily from 9:30 AM to 9:30 PM, King’s Shops sports a plethora of outstanding dining and shopping options within their lushly manicured grounds, and even comes with its very own farmer’s market every week that’s free to attend from 9 AM to 2:30 PM every Tuesday! A number of brand-name stores are nestled next door to fine art galleries and local establishments, and there are also several award-winning restaurants just waiting to welcome you in.
Check out their directory of shops here, and make sure you don’t miss out on this one-of-a-kind island experience!
From there, don’t forget to head on over to Queens’ Marketplace, located inside the rarified air of the well-renowned Waikoloa Beach Resort. Over 35 retailers are waiting to be enjoyed, not to mention the largest food court along the entire Kohala coast.
This family-friendly resort shopping destination is mere miles down the road from the Mauna Lani Resort and features some of the Big Island’s best in upscale dining and shopping, with a healthy blend of local and artisan shops in the mix.
Open daily from 10 AM to 8 PM, Queens’ Marketplace is also home to many special events throughout the week as well, including a weekly hula show on Wednesdays and their new monthly concert series on every third Saturday of the month. Most of these events are free to the public, and you can always head on over to their website for the most up-to-date information.
